Understanding the importance

It’s important to note that a small amount of earwax, scientifically referred to as cerumen, is beneficial for your ear canal. Earwax plays a crucial role in trapping dust and debris, acting as a natural defense and exhibiting antibacterial properties.

Normally, earwax is self-cleaning, with small amounts migrating out of the ear canal, making it visible and accessible for manual removal. This does not indicate that your ears are dirty or filled with wax. However, inserting objects like cotton tips can inadvertently push wax deeper into the ear canal, disrupting this natural cleaning process.

Why wax removal may be necessary:

  • Excess earwax can lead to hearing loss and ear infections.

  • Even if the wax production is normal, smaller ear canals can lead to quicker blockages.

  • The presence of tight bends in the ear canal can hinder the self cleaning process.

  • Clear ear canals are essential for optimal hearing aid performance, as hearing aids can interfere with the natural cleaning process.

Microsuction

Earwax removal with microsuction

Microsuction is the preferred method for wax removal among audiologists and ear specialists worldwide due to its safety and effectiveness. This technique employs gentle suction to extract wax from the ear canal without using messy liquids (as seen in ear syringing) or causing discomfort.

At Telex Hearing Care our audiometrists are highly trained in earwax removal. To enhance the success of the procedure, we recommend using wax-softening agents like Waxsol or Cerumol from your local pharmacy for a few days prior to your appointment, unless you have a perforated eardrum.

The process involves:

Visual Inspection:

Determining if wax removal is necessary and locating the buildup in the canal.

Assessing Wax Type:

Identifying whether the wax is dry and flaky or soft and sticky.

Gentle Wax Removal:

Using microsuction to safely and effectively remove the wax. This may require multiple passes.

Microsuction appointment costs:

Our earwax microsuction services are available at all three of our Central Coast hearing clinics, with each appointment lasting up to 30 minutes. This duration allows us to address your needs, inspect your ear canals, and perform the wax removal. The initial consultation for wax removal is priced at $60 per ear, covering most cases effectively. However, if additional appointments are required, subsequent sessions are available at $30 per ear. This could be necessary if the wax wasn’t sufficiently softened before the initial appointment. In cases where no wax is found during the inspection, the cost of the appointment is $60 total.
